Assignment 2 - Album covers

Album Cover Explanation

The main target audience of this album cover is teenagers, especially ones going through identity crisis or understanding the world. This is shown by the NVC of the artist in the album cover, looking conflicted and serious to show the tone of the album cover also. It also has a secondary audience, of gothic enthusiasts, shown by the dark clothing and apocalyptic setting. The apocalyptic setting resembles the state of the world that both audiences are coming to realise, and therefore attracts this type of audience. The colour scheme of the cover is quite cynical relating to the audiences thoughts, however the artist themselves has a lighter colour around them, giving them a somewhat holy and good image. The font itself has a dark gothic theme that appeals to the gothic audience and the parental advisory sign shows that the album has rebellious and serious content that would appeal to teenagers.

The conventions of album covers are mostly followed in the album. The artist appears on the album cover along with his name, and the title is outlined above the image, showing its importance. The title shows the tone and purpose of the songs, showing dark theme yet light meaning. However the cover challenges the conventions of having a simplistic design or colour scheme, which represents the complexity of songs and album itself, which in turn would appeal to the target audience.

Interview Explanation

The magazine that the interview would most likely feature in would be Vibe Magazine, a hip hop magazine that targets the 18-25 year old music enthusiasts. The interview would appeal to this audience as it announces 'a new superstar', grabbing the audience's attention in the artist and creating a professional image and world-breaking potential for the artist. The magazine immediately grabs the attention of the audience through this title ('Legend in the making'), showing the potential and level of the artist and his music.  'Meet Your New Superstar' is in red font also to catch the attention of the reader, with these strong words and colour hit the reader at first glance making them curious to find out about the artist and convinced that he is a new A-class celebrity, improving the artist's image.

The interview then talks about his current state and brief history to engage the reader. The interview asks questions on the artist's favourite music and bands, making him relatable to similar fans. As it continues, it speaks of his struggle to becoming an artist, creating a sympathetic image as well as having synergy with dark tone of his album. The artist then addresses his new album, saying it will tell of his struggle attracting the audience with the same struggle. Then he begins to talk about the fun aspects and funny stories, saying the album is universal as well as creating curiosity in the funny stories. He continues to promote the album, interesting the reader of this new artist. He speaks about his activist passions, giving a selfless and passionate image of the artist as well as attracting fellow activists of these issues. He addresses the sudden fame he has achieved and remain humble speaking of the fans, showing a humble artist who cares about his fans. Finally, with the reader already hooked into this new artist, he tells of his future plans and concerts that they can go to, as well as showing an option to order his new album that was promoted in the interview. The image used as the background is of the artists giving first impression of the artist, he uses the same dark clothes as his new album creating synergy in that gothic tone between the two.

The conventions of the double page spread interview are followed, to make the project as professional as possible. The artists appears along with a eye catching title and the artist answers to questions are displayed. There is a simple colour scheme and traditional font is used, and drop caps and colours are used for formality.
